OLYMPIA FRIDAY : David Takes on Goliaths By Greg Merritt |
|
Date: Saturday 15 October, 2005 |
"I can't describe how happy I am," an emotional David Henry proclaimed after winning the Olympia Wildcard Challenge on Friday. For his victory, the fat-free Henry won $10,000 and, most important to him, a spot in Saturday's Mr. Olympia. In so doing, he defeated eight other competitors, including pleasantly proportioned Brian Chamberlain, in second, and a just-off-the-mark Eddie Abbew, in third. Germany's arm-man Armin Scholz may have deserved the second spot, but in the end it was immaterial; the contest was winner-take-all. It was Henry's first overall win, and it couldn't have come at a better time. With richly delineated thickness, the 202-pound Henry says he'll have no trouble maintaining his dramatic conditioning through Saturday. "Tomorrow I'll be up there with Ronnie Coleman and the rest of them. Put me next to them, please. I know my conditioning will rival anyone on that stage tomorrow." He's right, and those bountiful striations could place him in the top 10. One thing is certain, all bets are off when the wildcard enters the game.
